There are many more such movies which according to me deserved much better response and reception, but they just disappeared from the corrupted minds of Tamil Cinema viewers. These movies, many of them, were honored in some other ways, like awards…
Now the list of movies:
Iyarkai: The heart rendering love story of a sailor and a simple girl living in the sea shore fishermen quarters. A slow paced movie with good music.
Azhagiya Theeye: A soft romantic from the production house of Prakash Raj… The first one of his string of movies with a difference.Kanaa Kandein: Movie with a good concept and a thriller background. The movie claimed a 100 day run, but with all decent performances esp. from outstanding Prithviraj, the movie deserved more.
Poovellam Kettupaar: Jyothika’s launch pad. Another soft romantic with a good screenplay, great music from Yuvan.
Rhythm: A family drama with Rahman’s wonderful music and excellent performance from the whole cast. Except for stereotypic climax, everything about the movie was good.
Punnagai Poove: The story of two thick friends who fall in love with the same guy. "Oru Poongili" song is still unforgettable.
Sachien: A classical romantic movie in recent times with Vijay and Genelia’s excellent performances. Good music and camera work. But the 101 mistakes in screenplay and presentation spoiled the movie and made it look like Kushi-Part 2. Still an enjoyable movie.
Anbe Sivam: A masterpiece in Tamil Cinema history and its result at box office is a proof of how bad is the taste of an average Tamil Cinema viewer.

Rhythm is excellent movie - I still remember a scene where arjun walks down to meena and says "Im not a teenager, and u are not one too..u act like as if iam gonna propose to you !. We are jus tamilians in this alien city and iam doing things for courtesy" Excellent music from ARR !!! Vasanth infact did it again (After his first movie starring SPB) but, went unacknowledged !! pity !!
I do have to agree to the whole list of your "almost hits" movies.
Sachien was an absolute cracker! I thoroughly enjoyed the movie and really started to like Vijay from then onwards!
Azhagiya Theeye received good response i suppose.that's why Prakash Raj is doing more film with new directors.Punnkai poove receved reasonable response i guess.
Azhagiya Theeye, Kanaa Kandein and Punnagai Poove were decent box office hits in my list. But still, how many ppl remember those movies even today? And they were categorised as multiplex hits, only among class A audience..
So when is the class B and C gonna improve their taste of Tamil Cinema? God only knows!! :-)
Certainly agree with your list of movies excepting for Laysa Laysa! It was one movie with absolutely no logic..Miss Trisha while supposedly grieving for Maddie in jail looty adichifies with Shyam! And the climax..Shyam tells her he'll be waiting for..and click..that's enough for Trisha to decide he's the guy for her! Ayyo i went mad watching that movie!
