My Childhood days

This feels like a misplaced blog post for me, might be because I am writing this flashback not as a part of my introduction in my blog, but as a regular post. But as I was watching few of my childhood snaps today, I thought of writing something on this title today.

As a child I was mischievous and infact boisterous, quite different from the today's calm and subtle character of mine. Taking care of me was a difficult task for my family till my 2 and a half years, after which they pushed me into KG class, not being able to withstand my attrocities at home :-)

Anything and everything colourful was an eatable for me. Once I swallowed the lid of a powder tin, thanks to the efforts of my mom's sister, I escaped from a fatal incident. And I continued eating chalk powder, pencil leads, pencil wood(all my pencils will be like a government bus crushed in a accident), brick powder(which topped my favourite list) and threads from my clothes... :-) May be my growing teeth needed something to be swallowed every now and then, not sure.

This continued until one day all these were found out and I was put on a strict diet void of all the above stuff ;-) I didn't stop with this. Taking me to school daily was an herculean task for my mother. Every day I would put up a new fight with my cousin with brave wounds on both of us. My father's elder sister who was taking care of me would have lost half her energy in looking after me.

The best part is, the moment I enter the school, there would be no sign of any bad thing from me and I was the most obedient student of the class. Even if someone from my house and complains to the staff about me, no staff was ready to believe them and thought something was wrong with the one who was complaining. :-D

Traffic Woes

Hosur Road - The national highway connecting Karnataka's capital Bangalore with Tamil Nadu and is the life line of hundreds of people who travel everyday from Bangalore to various parts of Tamil Nadu and vice versa. On its way to Hosur, it houses all IT majors and a lot of Electronic industries in the Techno Hub- Electronic City(EC). The same stretch also has a host of other IT companies and BPOs leading to thousands and thousands of techies travelling everyday in all sorts of transports.

Long back, I had posted about the traffic woes in Bangalore especially on the Hosur Road, and how people suffer everyday. Today the situation has not changed even a bit, and more worrying is the fact that it may worsen in near future mainly because of big and bigger facilities coming up in and out of EC and the biggest of all coming up on the way to EC.

If all these facilities are opened up in future, then it may add up to many thousands of techies and their vechicles on the Hosur Road. Add to this the new Elevated Highway construction planned by the government from Madiwala to EC. Upon all that, the monsoon rains that may soon hit Bangalore in a few months. Travelling in Hosur Road after a heavy rain is the biggest nightmare for any one who uses it.

Will the new elevated highway planned be of any use in reducing traffic?? Doubtful. More wiser plans would be automation of signals along Hosur road, widening of the existing road and construction of alternate routes for reaching the city from EC. Sitting in worst traffic jams for hours everyday is just a pain with the Radio City and your book companion helping you the least.

The best option is that IT companies should start looking for other cities in and out of Karnataka for their expansions. The city is already dead and stabbing a corpse more and more will not help in anyway.

Dishoom - of two hearts (The Review)

Cast: Jeeva, Sandhya, Nasser, Malavika
Music: Vijay Antony
Produced by: Oscar Films V Ravichandran
Story, Screenplay, Dialogues, Direction: Sasi

A rough and tough stuntman with a heart of gold. An art student girl who is more practical about life. What happens if love happens between the two? The Dishoom of these two hearts is what this movie "Dishoom" is all about.

Before saying anything, the movie had a lot of surprises for me:

1) It is just Dishoom of hearts. A stuntman's story might be expected to have half a dozen fights. But no fights for the hero, infact no villains.

2) There is no story without the hero's character. So is the movie hero centric? No... Without the heroine's character the story has no life. So is it heroine centric? No again. A beautiful story with equal scope for hero and heroine to perform.

3) After a long time, a beautifully etched heroine character in a Tamil movie. She is the new age girl without any fuss about it. Most important, she is not sentimental.

4) A soft romantic love story in an action filled backdrop. Total surprise for me expecting an action oriented movie with some love.

Bhaskar(Jeeva) meets Sindhiya(Sandhya) in an unusual meet after which they become friends. Slowly Bhaskar falls in love with Sindhiya and proposes it to her. She refuses stating a reason as she could not feel the same love as he does, and asks him time for that to happen. It happens, but the situation requires them to part ways... Will Bhaskar win his love back? The climax answers for that.

Jeeva maintains his great work in the lines of Raam. He completely fits as fighter Bhaskar with a heart of gold. Sandhya seems to have misunderstood director's words of "Unakku weight-u character ma".. She has put on a lot of weight compared to Kaadhal. Nevertheless, her portrayal of Sindhiya fills your heart...

Nasser and Malavika as Sandhya's parents have done a good job. The new comedian evokes good amount of laughter from you and eventually when he reasons out his actions, leaves you emotional too. Hats off for the decent comedy!!!

The major plus points of the film are the action sequences from Jeeva, strong dialogues and excellent camera work. Another point to mention is great music by Vijay Antony'. Especially the number "Nenjaankootil" is excellent. Also "Bhoomikku velichamellam", "Dailaamo" and "Kitta Nerungi vaadi" are good to listen to and well picturised. But still some justice could have been done with the lyrics in all songs.

Its a real tribute for all off screen heroes - the stuntmen - who play with their life for our onscreen heroes. Sasi has come up with an enjoyable romantic film as Valentine gift for Tamil Cinema viewers.

Summa Nachunnu Irukku :-)

I came across this song from the Malayalam movie Nandanam yesterday. Its a great melody with a pleasing tune. Jayachandran and Sujatha's voices flow like honey in this tune which is already like Sweetened milk.

It was a great experience for me listening to this song and believe me, I was listening to it about 25 times in a loop in my player last night :-)

What is so special about it? Really I don't know, but I found this simply great!!!

U too can have the experience of this song here.

356 C - The New Volvo Service

Today while on my way to office in the morning, I saw the new "Volvo" bus, running as apart of the new service started from Majestic-KG Bus Stand to Electronic City. With electronic display of Route number and enroute stops, it was really great to see the vehicle moving like a Majestic Red Horse in the morning traffic.

It is a welcome measure by the BMTC whereby techies coming from far off places will get benefitted. And 20 Rs. per trip might be affordable only by such techies and not by commons unless it is a 'once in a while' trip.

Whatever it is, a very good measure for an ailing population. :-)

Hyderabad Trip

I am back after my trip to Hyderabad from 3rd Febrauary to 5th Febrauary. It is one of my most favourite cities next to Chennai and I had been there for most of my vacations during school and college life.

As my train(it was an excellent journey, really enjoyed it) approached Kacheguda(the third terminus of Hyderabad apart from Nampalli and Secundrabad) I could see Chandrababu Naidu's past regime shining all over in Golden glitter of Sodium vapor lamps. The whole city presents you a scenary drawn in gold combined with the morning chill... It should be experienced, not explained.

I had a good break away from Bangalore traffic jams and pollution for about 3 days. Overall a refreshing trip and I am recharged again... :-)

Few observations:

1) The city has a very good local train system intelligently implemented and maintained. I doubt whether it would be a possible reality in Bangalore, even in the distant future!!!
2) The city has a constantly improving bus service in terms of quality and quantity. This, inspite of buses not being primary means of transport there.
3) The city is ever growing in terms of beauty. :-)

Love my Hyderabad!!! :-)

A legend's history

This is the cine life story of my dear Athai(father's elder sister) about whom I had mentioned in my earlier post on Music Interests.

She is a legend for me and I am blessed to have lived in the same era as her!!!

Born near Ilathoor near Thenkasi in 1925, her original name is Thenkasi Seenivasa Bagawathy. She was stopped from shcooling after class four. Her grandfather who was a kathakalatchebam singer paid the foundation for her to become a singer in later days. When the grand father died, the grandmother joined the Trichi Radio where she introduced the 14 year old TSB. TSB was paid Rs 20 per month as a singer in Radio Trichy. She alos was acting and singing in the radio dramas. While ther she got the acquaintence of many music directors.

Soon she went on a tour singing for the Tamil Isai Iyakkam. In viruthunagar she was awarded the title of "Isaikkuyil" in the presence of Ramasamy Nadar.

While TSB was singing in the Trichirapalli Radio station AV Meyappa Chettiar heard her voice and pulled her into cinema. Initially she hesitated to sing for cinema, as cinema industry was looked down in the 1940s. But owing to financial situation she had to accept the offer in 1947. That was the turing point for her and her fans.

In 1947 AVM was producing the famous film Naam Iruvar. TSB sang a few songs for TA Jeyalachumy. The most popular was of course "Vasantham Tharum Maalai" But her fams shot among the Tamil song fans and the educated bracket for singing Bharathiyar songs in Naam Iruvar. "Solai Malar Oliyo" is the song that was liked by many. "Kannnil Theriyum oru Thotram" is yet another song that shot into popularity.

We may remember another famous film of AVM- Vaazhkai, where TS B sang some songs, but those songs did not become greatr hits. The only famous song here is the Uzhavan Nadagam song. It was Parasakthy that made her most popular from 1952.

TS Bagawathy would always be associated with Parasakthy for the good songs she gave there-

1.Ilvazhviniley Oli Yetrum Dheepam (With Hussein)
2.Poomalai Neeye
3.Porule Illarkku Thollaiyaam
4. Konjum Mozhi Sollum
5. Ellroum Vazha Vendum

SO these five songs of Parasakthy are songs for different emotions- kathal, thalattu, sogam, thathuvam. Ultimately the sad songs became most famous on account of the emotions that she was able to sucessfuly deliver in those songs. With the kick of her sad songs in Parasakthy, the cine world trade-marked her for sad songs. For a decade at least TSB had been singing mainly sad songs.

SAD SONGS
Following her fame for singing sad songs in Parasakthy, C. S. Jayaraman made her sing "Thatti Parithaar En Vaazhvil" and "Pengaley Ulaka Penkaley" in the film Ratha Kanneer. Thencame Malayitta Mangai of Kannadasan. In this film she sang "Purappadu maganey Purappadada" Kannadasan used her again in another sad song in his film Sivagengai Seemai. The sad thalattu song sung along with S. Varalachumy is "Tendral Vanthu Veesatho"

Then she sang another song in Kavalai Illatha Manithan-Kannodu Vin Pesum Jaadai, along with GK Vengkadesh. This song did not become popular.

In Kairasi, Govarthanam-the brother of Sudarsanam made her sing a song with P.Leela-"Paalilum Thenilum Suvai Ethu" a very melodious song.

By this time TS Bagawathy was showing reluctance in singing for the cinemas for two reasons- firstly her songs were no more becoming hits, and secondly the producers were not good paymasters as far as she was concerned. So she went back to radio.

Therfore, TS Bagawathy became famous for singing sad songs, and her era was short lived. To recapitulate, Parasakthy will always be associated with TS Bagawathy.
